Central to expressive arts therapy is the belief that the process of making art — in any media — is as important as the content it expresses. Awakening to the innate creativity within us brings the wisdom of a deeper self into the light of day. Even when one is dealing with painful or frightening issues, the experience of expressing oneself through a creative process can provide fresh perspectives and a sense of hope and empowerment. Making art reignites the creative spirit, helps us see our lives in new ways, and taps into powerful new resources for confronting life's challenges. Expressive arts therapy may include, according to clients' needs and preferences, drawing, painting, writing, movement, drama, music, and sandtray work. No previous arts experience is necessary.

This workshop will explore how drama therapy is used with individual clients and couples. In psychotherapy that is mainly talk focused, clients often stay within an intellectual realm that can be restrictive and create blocks to insight and behavioral change. Through the use of drama, clients discover visceral connections to their issues through embodiment. In this workshop you will also learn how drama therapy can break through resistance and teach us how to find empathy for our partners and ourselves.

Drama and Expressive Arts are often the preferred therapeutic modalities for children and adolescents. Children naturally communicate their feelings through play, metaphor, and the arts. Engaging in an artistic process fosters self-expression, increases confidence, and builds social skills. Therapists of Living Arts invite parents and caregivers to an informational presentation on the methods, goals, and treatment approaches to using expressive arts and drama therapy with children and adolescents.
