Workshop Title: Playback Theatre and Therapeutic Change
Facilitated by: Andrea Thring, MFT Trainee and Ben Rivers, MFT Trainee
Workshop Description:
Playback Theatre transforms personal stories into improvised theater pieces using movement, ritual, music and spoken improvisation. It creates community and connection among people by honoring the dignity, drama and universality in their stories. First developed in 1975 by psychodramatist Jonathan Fox, Playback Theatre is now practiced around the world in theatres, schools, psychiatric hospitals, prisons, and the business world.
Playback Theatre offers an opportunity to have your stories fully heard and deeply witnessed. The healing that flows from this gift of affirmation and validation can be profound. New insights and self awareness can also arise as we see our stories enacted with fresh perspective. For Playback actors there are also opportunities for personal growth and self discovery. By embodying the stories of others we develop receptiveness and empathy. Playback Theatre also invites healing through the cultivation of spontaneity, expressiveness, creativity, self-confidence, playfulness and cooperation.

Through moment-to-moment improvisational theatre exercises, you can discover how to surrender your impulses to the perfection of the present moment.
The goals of the workshop will be to increase your comfort with eye contact, enhance spontaneity and confidence in daily living, practice risk-taking, learn and to try new behaviors in a safe and supportive environment, reduce feelings of shame and guilt with exercises in setting limits and claiming your voice.
No previous acting or improvisational theatre experience necessary.
Workshop Title: Introduction to Expressive Arts Therapy
Facilitated by: Jerri Lee Young, MFT Intern and Cheryl Leong, MFT Intern
Workshop Description:
Central to expressive arts therapy is the belief that the process of making art — in any media — is as important as the content it expresses. Awakening to the innate creativity within us brings the wisdom of a deeper self into the light of day. Even when one is dealing with painful or frightening issues, the experience of expressing oneself through a creative process can provide fresh perspectives and a sense of hope and empowerment. Making art reignites the creative spirit, helps us see our lives in new ways, and taps into powerful new resources for confronting life's challenges. Expressive arts therapy may include, according to clients' needs and preferences, drawing, painting, writing, movement, drama, music, and sandtray work. No previous arts experience is necessary.
Workshop Title: Creative Arts Therapies with Children 6-11. (An informational session for parents with a creative expression workshop for kids in an adjacent room).

Workshop Description:
Drama Therapy and Expressive Arts Therapy help children to identify, express, and contain feelings. They also can be therapeutic tools in helping kids work through difficult transitions and traumatic experiences. In this workshop children are invited to participate in playful interactive theatre games designed to build positive self-esteem, and strengthen peer relationships.
Parents are invited to participate in an informational workshop on the benefits of drama, expressive arts, and play therapy for children.

Workshop Title: Exploring the Legacy of Immigration---our own and our ancestors’
Facilitated by: Armand Volkas, MFT, RDT/BCT, Clinical Director, Living Arts Counseling Center, Founder, Healing the Wounds of History
Workshop Description:
Immigration – the challenge of finding home in a foreign land -- is a central and defining theme in American culture. Whether we are native, arrived by choice or by force, the ghosts of history lie within us. Inside our constructed identity lie the cracks that hold the fragments of our collective stories. Exploring our own and our ancestors’ experience of immigration the facilitator will help participants illuminate and honor their personal and communal heritage.
