Are you ready to take new risks in the New Year, to commit to letting go of unhelpful patterns and self-defeating behaviors, and to develop new, life-affirming beliefs, behaviors, and goals? It’s time to throw out—or at least put aside—the old that’s no longer working for you, and to re-imagine and create the life that you want and deserve to live. There’s no better time than the present, and drama therapy is a particularly effective and innovative way to not only better understand who you are and your story, but to practice stepping into this new you.
What do I mean by a “new you”? Oftentimes, there are healthy parts of ourselves or personality that are latent, unexpressed, or underdeveloped. Within the context of dynamic therapeutic relationships, we are able to better access and exercise these parts of ourselves, which can allow us to live more expansively, deliberately, and authentically. Drama therapy is particularly well suited to this process, because it enables us to not only explore and express the diverse spectrum of who we are, but also to make conscious choices about who it is that we want to be, and how we want to respond, in each situation.
Drama therapy is the skilled and deliberate use of drama and theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals. Unlike traditional talk therapy, drama therapy is more active and experiential. It provides participants with a safe, yet stimulating context in which to explore personal and family stories, set goals, uncover and express feelings, resolve problematic patterns, and achieve release of long-held emotions. Because drama therapy is both active and reflective, it helps people to better integrate emotional, cognitive, and physical levels of experience.
