Title of Presentation: The Perpetrator Within (Subtitle?)
Abstract description:
History has shown us there can be no political solutions to the issues which challenge humankind until we as a species (make peace with, integrate, tame, accept, confront?) the potential perpetrator in all of us. Summary Description (250 words):
(Very Rough Draft)
This one-day workshop is based on the premise that there can be no political and social solutions to the issues which face us in the new millennium until we understand, make peace with and integrate the potential perpetrator within all of us. Responding to the urgency in the conference title "The Call to Action" and incorporating the conference theme of social transformation, the presenters propose to create an experiential expressive arts therapy forum on the role of the perpetrator. Using developmental transformations, Playback Theatre, Sociodrama, Psychodrama and other methods, participants will explore the ethical, moral and spiritual questions raised by confronting, the perpetrator within our clients, society and ourselves.
Is there a potential perpetrator within all of us? If so, is it tamable? How?
What is a perpetrator? Rapist? Murderer? Unquestioning, compliant, bureaucrat? Victim?
How do drama therapists manage their emotions, boundaries and counter-transference issues in the face of their client's dehumanizing, degrading, humiliating behavior?
These questions and others will be explored.
Between them, the presenters bring extensive experience and skills in working with PTSD, conflict resolution, intercultural communication, the trans-generational transmission of trauma, and reconciliation work.
