Mental Illness and Family Wellness
A Supportive Expressive Arts Group for
the Loved Ones of People with Serious Mental Illness
 
No art experience required
 
  • Do you wish that you could meet other people who understand your experience as a family member or loved one with mental illness?
  • Do you sometimes wish that you had a safe place to express your feelings associated with the responsibilities and experiences of caring for a loved one with a mental health issue?
  • Or do you just want to learn skills in order to better communicate with your loved one?

In this 6-week expressive arts group, you will get to meet other people like yourself while learning to cope and gain the skills necessary to support your loved ones with serious mental illness.  Moreover, you will be encouraged to creatively expressing yourself through collage making, painting, simple role playing exercises, or movement. Self-care, establishing boundaries,
feelings of safety, expression of emotions, coping skills, healthy communication will be among the topics explored.

About the facilitator: Claire Polansky is currently the program manager for National Alliance on Mental Illness—San Francisco (NAMI SF) a non-profit dedicated to destigmatizing mental illness. She has also served as a case manager/art therapist at Luke Dorf, Safe Haven in Portland, OR—a housing first facility that served the chronically homeless and mentally ill. In addition, she has worked extensively with at-risk youth and child witnesses of domestic violence. She graduated from Prescott College with an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with an Expressive Arts Therapy emphasis. She is pursuing her Ph.D in East-West Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies.
